Top five albums (this year so far)

It’s been a great year for pop music. It really has. For me personally, I’ve expanded my taste in music slightly as well.  Where my top 5 (well, 6 actually) are mainly guitar based, I’ve really gotten into the likes of Major Lazer and Buraka Som Sistema this year, plus a lot of hip-hop. Although none of the hip-hop albums this year managed to make my list, I’d say the new DOOM came close.

With the risk of repeating myself, I honestly think 2008/09 has been a really special, important and fucking immense time for Northern Irish music. We have some really exciting bands coming through like Not Squares, Cutaways, ASIWYFA, Cashier Number 9 and Continuous Battle Of Order but to name a tiny few. They only disappointment for me is we’re still light on albums. But saying that, ASIWYFA have produced my of my favorites of the year. I concede I was late to the And So I… party, but I’m here now so wind your neck in.

1. Cymbals Eat Guitars – Why There Are Mountains

2. Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse – Dark Night Of The Soul

3. Passion Pit – Manners

3. Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

4. And So I Watch You From Afar – Self-titled

5. Sunset Rubdown – Dragonslayer

Mentions:

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Condo Fucks – Fuckbook

Major Lazer - Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do

DOOM – Born Like This

Buraka Som Sistema - Black Diamond (though technically this is a re-release.)

Liking Passion Pit and Phoenix but don’t know the others. My favourites so far would include Sweet Billy Pilgrim’s Twice Born Men and Temper Trap’s Conditions.
